Medical Information
Before
the Trip
Vaccinations needed for the East coast of Africa include:
- Hepatitis
B (3 injections im over a six month period for primary immunisation and
then a booster every 3 yrs, the primary doses can be given over a 2 week
period if you have left things late)
- Yellow
Fever (1 injection lasting 10yrs)
- Tetanus/Diphtheria
(booster every 10 yrs)
- Typhoid
(combined with Hepatitis A vaccine, booster needed at 3 yrs)
- Hepatitis
A (2 injections im over 6 months and booster at 10 yrs)
- BCG
(if not had at school)
- Rabies
(3 injections im over 1 month)
- Polio
(booster for travellers at 10yrs)
- Meningococcal
(ACWY Vax) recommended for travellers
- Dukoral
oral cholera vaccine, 2 doses taken 1-6 weeks apart

Malaria
Very high risk
Mefloquine (Lariam) or Doxycycline (antibiotic) or Malarone
recommended
We have chosen Lariam as have taken it before and it
is
only once a week and can be taken for up to 1 year. Malarone can only be taken
for 3months.

the Trip
First Aid Bag
- Medicines
(augmentin-chest/urine/skin infections, metronidazole-gut infections,
chloramphenicol- eye infections, loperamide-diarrhoea, antihistamines,
analgesics)
- Dressings
(sterile swabs, plasters and bandages, suture equipment, sterile water,
micropore tape)
- IVI
(needles, syringes, iv giving sets, normal saline iv, venflons, sterile
gloves)
- First
Aid (scissors, tweezers, antiseptic, thermometer, insect repellant)
- Creams
(steroid cream, antiseptic cream)
I am lucky being a Doctor but I still have no desire
to use any of my skills on our trip.
