Here and There in Africa

Here is some useful info we found invaluable. Hopefully, it is not so much that you lose the sense of adventure.

Tunisia

LandRover parts dealer in Tunis: PTR, 69 Avenue de Carthage, Tunis. Tel:0021671336742 ptr@planet.tn

GPS can cause problems at the border. We got away with it and declared ours to customs. Others had their GPS sealed in a plastic bag with a coded cable-tie which was documented in the passport and checked at the exit customs. Another guy hid the GPS and did not get into difficulty. We have no idea why we avoided problems.

Libya

We got our guide via an agency. He can be contacted direct and can organise visas and the requisite paper work for the frequent police checkpoints. He is Ayad Hussain 00218925080738 and is based in Tripoli. He also knows a diesel mechanic in Tripoli who can source some LandRover parts. The Tunis dealer above will travel to the Libyan border with parts if necessary.

There are no ATMs and travellers cheques are not accepted outside Tripoli.

Egypt

LandRover/Jaguar main dealer in Cairo is near the airport.

Sudanese visa available in Cairo (and apparently Aswan). It took us about an hour and we didn't need a letter of recommendation. However we met a couple who had needed a letter only 2 days earlier. Go figure... We found a scanned letter of recommendation on www.pkoverland.com and brought copies with us just in case.

Ferry from Sharm el-Sheikh to Hurghada is 250EP pp and 350EP per car. The tickets can be bought from Mina Tours in the Marriott Hotel in Na'ama Bay Tel: 0693600936. We were told our car was too tall at 2.5m (the limit is apparently 1.9m) but other people have been allowed on with similar cars.
